New secondary air filter units offer extra protection for chemical and pharma conveying.
Taby, Sweden – Ensuring a safe workplace environment for staff working in processing plants for chemical and pharmaceutical products, Piab is introducing new, ultra-fine secondary air filter units for use with the company’s vacuum conveying equipment. Offered as standard accessories, the sterile filters are of the ultra-fine filtration class – U15-17, so called Ultra Low Penetration Air (ULPA) filters.
Capable of a filtration efficiency down to 99.9999 per cent, the new filter units offer an improved filtration performance compared with the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters often used today. Designed to fit the capacity of any of Piab’s compressed air driven vacuum pumps, the filters can be used in a broad range of vacuum conveying applications, where they meet the demands of producers of manufacturing equipment as well as products such as detergents. Used with Piab’s state-of-the-art piFLOW®p conveyors for pharmaceutical powder and bulk materials, or the dedicated tablet conveyor piFLOW®t, the filter units will, for instance, ensure that the exhaust air is completely free from medically active ingredients, eliminating any potential health risks for the processing staff.
“The filter units are designed to be fitted between the pump and the conveyor body. They are easy to fit and to remove for replacement. However, if primary filters are correctly fitted, dimensioned and maintained, these secondary filters should last indefinitely and never need to be replaced,” says Tomas Dahl, Strategic Sales OEM, Piab’s Materials Handling Division.
Vacuum technology is the preferred option for the conveying of materials such as detergent ingredients, including enzymes or mixed powders containing enzymes. These materials are typically fed into mixers and blenders, tablet presses, and packaging machines. Piab’s vacuum conveyors meet the producers’ requirements regarding contained conveying under negative pressure, gentle dense phase conveying, and can now provide the optional ULPA filtration to further ensure the complete removal of traces of enzymes and other harmful materials from the exhaust air.
