What is "food-grade" powder handling – and what does it require?

"Food-grade" is shorthand for a set of requirements that powder handling equipment must meet to be used in food, beverage, and nutraceutical production. It is not a single certification but a stack of standards.

The core principles

Material compatibility. Contact surfaces must be made of materials approved for food contact – typically stainless steel (EN 1.4404 / AISI 316L) and certified elastomers compliant with EU 1935/2004 and FDA 21 CFR 177.
Hygienic design. Geometry must allow cleaning without dead zones, crevices, or horizontal ledges where product can accumulate. Design standards include EHEDG guidelines and 3-A Sanitary Standards.
Cleanability and verification. It must be possible to clean the system to a documented standard and verify that cleaning has been successful – through visual inspection, swabbing, or rinse testing

Allergen and cross-contamination control. When the same line handles multiple products, the equipment must support changeover procedures that prevent allergen carry-over.

Why this matters operationally

Food-grade is not just about regulatory compliance. The same design principles that make a system food-grade – smooth surfaces, no dead zones, easy disassembly – are also what make it fast to clean. In powder handling, the QA cost of an unclean line is often higher than the equipment cost itself.

The link to throughput and labour

Good food-grade design directly supports stable throughput and sustainable work. Shorter, more predictable cleaning cycles and fewer hard-to-reach areas mean less time spent on intense manual cleaning and fewer re-cleans triggered by uncertainty about clean state. Over time, that frees up operator time, reduces fatigue, and makes it easier for the line to run to plan.
